On the Rivers of Memory-1
Description: “On the Rivers of Memory” is the name of a yearly recurring research project organized by the Youth Memorial. Volunteers go on short trips around the Perm Region to collect materials concerning political repression in the Soviet era. In particular, they interview former political prisoners, record their recollections, and put up commemorative signs at the sites of former Gulag camps or “special settlements”.
Type of Work: Volunteer will on short trips by boat at the river. They will restoration of previously installed commemorative signs to the memory of the victims of the Great Terror along the route of the expedition. The volunteers will work at Stvor, the site of a former Soviet corrective labor camp, where the Youth Memorial has set up an experimental museum – “Museum without a Guide”. Study Theme: history of the political repression in Soviet time in Russia. All the projects of the Youth Memorial focus on promoting the ideas of tolerance, intercultural dialogue, democracy and Human Rights through the development of civic activism. We encourage volunteers to engage in preserving the memory of the past in their countries, in commemorating the victims of totalitarian regimes through participation in civil actions.
Accommodation: in the tents. The weather can be cold thats why volunteer need to take warm clothes.
Requirements: • participants must be present for the whole duration of the project (except, of course, force majeure circumstances or situations previously agreed with the organizers); • participants are expected to be highly motivated for the type of work and activities proposed
Approximate Location: Gornozavodsk and Chusovoy municipal districts in the Perm region, traveling down the Koyva and Chusovaya rivers on catamarans from the village of Kusye-Aleksandrovsky to the city of Chusovoy. Vounteers should go to the Perm city at the first day of the workcamp.
Notes: The Youth Memorial provides the necessary traveling equipment (catamarans, tents) and, if necessary, sleeping bags and backpacks. The organizers will cover most of the food, accommodation, cultural and educational programs costs during each expedition. Travelling expenses from and to Perm will also be covered by the host organisation.
