Refugees welcome: supporting migrants near the Italian-French border (Ventimiglia, Liguria region)
Description: Associazione Iris ONLUS/ Progetto20k work in Ventimiglia with the poeple blocked at the border with France. The main activities are: monitoring the territory, distributing essential goods, informing migrants on their rights and giving legal support when necessary, free internet access to all and allowing charging the cellphones. The last services are given thorugh the Infopoint Eufemia since July 2017. The key points of the project are active solidarity and promotion of self determination of migrants. The project accomplishes all this thanks to the contribution of hundreds of volunteers. In the summer period there is an increase of migrants and at the borders there is a high concentration of people. We will make a camping site to host up to 40/50 volunteers for the summer 2018.
Type of Work: The planned work will be exclusively manual: we will rearrange the field, that will host the tents, build ecological showers, toilets and an external kitchen ( in addition to the existing one, that is internal to a structure that will be also renewed during the camp). The structure hosts a kitchen, a toilet, a shower and an area that will become the social one which is both internal and external. The daily program starts at 8:00 AM with breakfast, the manual work starts at 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM and then again between 2:30 and 5:00 PM. After 5:00 PM all volunteers are free, therefore the working periods never exceed 6 hours per day and there will be two days of rest per week to allow visiting the italian and french surroundings.
Study Theme: The collective study is divided into 4 phases: 1)introduction to the themes of vernacular architecture -the set of techniques developed over time to supply the building needs while respecting local places and materials- plus the exposition of case studies; 2) report on the work planned for the camp: description of the area, the objectives and the available resources ; 3) workshops related to the main techniques, that will be used during the camp (timber, clay, dry stone walls); 4) informal analysis of the activities Progetto 20k, migration policies and ways to face up them.
Accommodation: The volunteers will sleep in a tents for two people provided by the camp organizers. They will be set in an area of the camping next to the existing structure, that hosts the shared toilet, the shower and the kitchen. During the camp there will be some volunteers of the partner association, that will do the cooking and the cleaning. There is no wifi but phone connection exists in the area.
Language: Spoken languages during the camp are: Arabic, English, Italian, French, Spanish. All volunteers should speak either English or Italian to be able to communicate with the other volunteers, the locals and eventually the migrants.
Requirements: Is required a good manual ability, a predisposition to construction works and interest in sustainable building techniques that will be used. As there is a high number of olive trees and is foreseen the use of materials such as concrete, powders, resins, foams and plastic materials, the allergies of different nature could be an effective risk and a limiting factor to accomplish the camp activities.
Approximate Location: The camp is located near the medieval village of Rocchetta Nervina, in the province of Imperia.
Notes: In the area of the camp there is no wifi available connection, but there is phone coverage so that volunteers can use their mobile data connection. The camping is isolated from the main urban and commercial area. In Rocchetta Nervina there are only a bar with a small shop and a restaurant, therefore all services (cash machine, supermarket, etc.) are placed in Dolceacqua which can be reached by car and is on the road to Ventimiglia. Is only possible to get to the camp from Ventimiglia by car, therefore it is recommended to bring the driving licence if in possess and eventually the own car in order to be independent. There are two cars belonging to the project that can be used to move around. Progetto20k’s activities sometimes are outlaw, it could happen that police will identify volunteers.
