Description: This workcamp is organized by SCI India and CTRD Trust. CTRD TRUST: The Centre for Tribals and Rural Development Trust (CTRD Trust) is a voluntary organisation registered under the Indian Trust Act in the state of Tamil Nadu. We currently work on projects and programmes aimed at promoting and strengthening the livelihood, welfare and development of the poor tribal and rural communities of the Nilgiri District. This involves organising them, enhancing their capabilities, introducing new ways of improving their income and linking them to banks, markets and other health, welfare and economic services. Experienced professional teams based in the field use their skills and knowledge to alleviate poverty by working directly with these communities.
Type de travail: The volunteers will be engaged in helping in the construction of 21 all weather proof houses for the tribal community located at Narangamoola village. Rural Housing Projects’ prime objective is to construct 21 weather-proof houses as well as sanitation facilities during a period of three years in the Narangamoola village in accordance to values, traditions and needs of South India’s indigenous population: The work consists mainly physically demanding construction work. This includes carrying and piling bricks, mixing cement, painting etc. The group will also visit other indigenous communities and the surrounding area of the Nilgiris District (International Biosphere Reserve) to get to know more about the indigenous culture and their living circumstances as well as unique surrounding.
Thèmes de reflexion / d'études : The main focus of this camp is to improve the living conditions for one of India’s poorest ethnic minorities by providing adequate housing and sanitation facilities. Additionally, the participants get to know the living conditions of an indigenous community. Most days of the workcamp will be covered by construction works in the Narangamoola village. However, weather conditions (like heavy rain)do not always allow activities to take place outdoors. Participants should also use this opportunity to share something about issues in their home country.
Hébergement The facilities are basic with outside located showers (Indian Bucket Bath with no warm water), pit latrines and a kitchen. Please be aware that there is no internet (Wi-Fi), no washing machine and sometimes no electricity due to frequent power cuts. Participants will sleep in tents so please bring sleeping bags, thermal mats and mosquito spray.
Food : Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be cooked by the organization’s a full-time . All food is with flavorsome Indian spices added like chili powder, pepper, turmeric, cumin, coriander, mustard seeds etc. as the basic ingredients.

Participants will stay at the Ealamanna Campus of CTRD.Ealamannais located in a remote area surrounded by tea and coffee plantations. It is close to the small towns Kolapalli (2km), Pandalur (15km) and Gudalur (30 km). CTRD’s main office is situated inGudalur,“The Nilgiris” (BlueMountains) District in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. It can be regarded as a remote region being covered by hills,mountains, forests, tribal villages and tea estates.
Notes: Conditions of Participation:
- You are expected to be an active member of the group and contribute to work, housekeeping and free time activities.
- You are expected to work 5 to 6 hours per day five days a week on a voluntary basis.
- Your independence will be respected during the camp but the camp leader has the ultimate responsibility for your safety during the workcamp and they have to sort out the problems if you get lost or injured.
- If you want to do an activity independently of the group you must discuss it with the camp leaders and they must be fully aware of your plans.
- You should not spend the night away from the camp nor host other people at the workcamp.
- 6.Any kind of addictions, alcohol, illegal drugs is not allowed at campsite.
