Protecting the forest near the medieval abbey of Sacra di San Michele (Piedmont region)
Description: Principi Pellegrini: diVangazioni pursues rural and environmental development through the practicing of cooperative seed saving schemes among which a long-term ancient grain project fostering their reintroduction in homestead farms. We are linking these rural activities to a project named CamBio, which focuses on forest pathways connecting Val Sangone and Val di Susa to the the Abbey of Sacra di San Michele. One of its objectives is to enforce touristic potential of the territory and to maintain the wooden areas. The main beneficiaries are the local communities and visitors. CamBio is part of the candidature of Sacra di San Michele to become UNESCO World Heritage through the interconnection of ancient pilgrimage routes and the sorrounding territories.
Type of Work: Volunteers' tasks will be cleaning the pathways in the woods, providing water to the visitors and to the base of the camp, collecting leaves, branches and brushes in order to prevent forest fires. The work is expected to be hard because it will be done in the woods which might be steep. The work implies heavy cutting, digging, collecting and transportation, done either by hand or by the chainsaws of our partners of the forest fire prevention teams (also volunteers). We will be working in a period of the year which can be very hot, and for most of the time we are going to be far from the base camp. Volunteers will work six hours per day.
Study Theme: The Study part will be divided in three sections: brief explanation of the agenda for each day (with rationales and objectives), some sessions of one hour each in which we will be dealing with the subjects touched during the work (and attracting the curiosity of the volunterers) and finally some afternoons of educational work during which we will undertake some agricultural tasks (without engine powered tools).
Accommodation: Volunteers should bring their own tents as they will sleep under pine trees. They will use a compost toilet (no water) and shower built among the trees. The kitchen will be built under a shed made of trees of the area. Volunteers will cook and clean for themselves as well as for any guest coming for a visit, based on a plan supervised by the camp coordinator. Volunteers need to bring with them their own tents (limited number of tents are locally available but if needed it has to be stated when appying), sleeping bag and towel.
Requirements: It is important to be ready for hard conditions at the location, be used to heavy work, have some manual skills and good health.
Approximate Location: The camp is located on Strada dei Principi, ancient pilgramage and connection way to the abbey Sacra di San Michele. Most jobs undertaken will be in the territory of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, (seat of the host association Principi Pellegrini: diVangAzioni), Valgioie ed Avigliana. Torino is 1 hour away (by public transport). The camp is in a remote mountain area which is an additional 1 hour walk from the nearest public transport station.
Notes: During this camp no red meat will be provided and very little other meat in general, while eggs, pasta, potatoes and various vegetables will be available. Internet access will be possible through a Wifi network in the surroundings of the buildings of the association (50 meters from the tent area). The camp is held in a very remote area and is around 1 hour away from the nearest shop or bank. In case of need the volunteers can be given a car lift, but very limited.
