Organising activities in the Asylum Seekers Center of Natoye
Description: The Red-Cross center of Natoye « Le Relais du Monde » is an open center for asylum-seekers of various origins. The residents of the center benefit from social and material assistance and medical care during the waiting period of their application for asylum (in order to be recognized as a refugee). The center has the capacity to host up to 250 people, but following the increasingly restrictive migration policies, the capacity of the center has been reduced. Today the center welcomes 227 people including 15 unaccompanied minors and 20 lone women. Residents mainly come from Afghanistan, Iraq, Burundi … The aim of the volunteering project is to encourage intercultural gathering between the volunteers and the residents of the center, and to propose leisure activities to the residents.
Type of Work: The volunteers will organize and lead different activities for the residents (children and adults): sport, handicraft and art workshops, cooking, visits, etc. At the beginning of the project, a planning of the activities will be set up by the group and everyone will be able to propose activities in which he/she feels at ease.
Study Theme: Discovery of the asylum application procedures in Belgium. The first day of the camp there will be a training about intercultural living. At the end of the camp, the volunteers and the residents will set up a small show for the other people from the center.
Accommodation: Volunteers will sleep in one of the rooms of the center. The comfort is very basic.
Language: Basics in French even if a lot of residents do speak English.
Requirements: A motivation letter is required for this camp. Only for volunteers from 20 years old. For those who enjoy working in teams. Volunteers with an experience with kids and/or creative volunteers are particularly welcome. The budget granted to the Centers was drastically reduced so volunteers are encouraged to realize activities at a lower cost. those who want are welcome to bring material with them.
Approximate Location: The center “Le Relais du Monde” is located, 300 meters from the Natoye train station, in a 10 ha domain. Natoye is a village located near Namur.
Notes: Not accessible to wheelchairs.
The budget for the food is very restricted for the residents, this can be an issue for some volunteers (lack of variety and taste). Please take some food with you if you think it can be a problem.
