Fight Inequalities with 15th Oxfam Trailwalker
Description: Across the world, Oxfam is working to find concrete and innovative solutions to fight against poverty. Oxfam also campaigns for the voice of poor people to be heard in local and international decisions that affect them. In all of its actions, Oxfam works with partner organizations and with vulnerable women and men to end the injustices that cause poverty.
Type of Work: Supporting the organization of the 15th "Oxfam Trailwalker" on August 27 and 28, 2022, which aims to fight against inequalities in the world. Alongside this, each team raises funds for Oxfam-Solidarity projects around the world. The volunteers will help set up the facilities in order to receive the walkers (1,000) and their supporters (mounting the tent, decorating the place …). During the event, they will be dispatched to different places along the route in order to support the organization (provide meals, water, and support walkers, scanning, etc.). Those who wish can take equipment to provide entertainment for the walkers: musical instruments, disguises, etc. Volunteers will have a free day at the beginning of the project and at the end in Brussels.
Study Theme: Extreme inequalities: one in three people in the world live in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change this situation by mobilizing citizen power. On the first day, the group of volunteers will be made aware of North/South issues and will be able to immerse themselves in the economic globalization and understand the social and environmental impacts. Oxfam wants to end extreme inequality. Better social security and health care for all, financed by a fair tax system, are therefore feasible and necessary solutions.
Accommodation: Arrival in Brussels, at the Oxfam offices to participate to awareness raising sessions. First three nights in Brussels, accommodation in the Oxfam building. Then departure to Saint Hubert, where the volunteers will be housed in a building. Take your sleeping bag and mattress with you. Accomodation with basic comfort. The volunteers will cook for themselves while in Brussels. During the Trailwalk, meals will be prepared by a cookingteam. No internet connection at the trail location.
Language: English/French/Dutch
Requirements: For volunteers who love nature and sporting challenges (even if the volunteers will not be walking). The week is quite strenous and the project quite short. Volunteers will be required to do night shifts during the march. These moments are often particularly tiring and rich in exchanges with the walkers.
Approximate Location: In Brussels at the beginning and the end of the project. Then in the region of Saint Hubert, not far from the small town of Rochefort, in the province of Luxembourg. The second and last day of the project will be free days in Brussels.
Notes: Additional fee: Many SCI workcamps will have an additional fee of €50.00. This will cover - local hosting costs; International insurance costs of the volunteer; a small travel fund to enable disadvantaged volunteers to join projects; administration costs of SCI International. If you apply through an SCI branch, the fee will be included in the fee you pay to your sending branch. If you apply through a partner organisation you will pay the fee on arrival at the project; direct to the hosting branch or through a PayPal transfer system. When accepted on the project the host branch will give you more details of the various payment options.
