Workcamp Details
Koh Bulon
Description: Volunteers will organize activities with kids at the small school of KohBulon Island, in the Andaman sea, South Thailand. There will have a few activities with the fishermen local community. We keep organizing this workcamp every year since the school request in 2013 . It’s beneficial for everyone to make social volunteer work, for the local population to see foreigners in a different way than tourism, for the volunteers to understand the reality of the local life, to exchange… and work on common aims.
Type of Work: • Give non-formal English classes by organizing creative activities • Create teaching materials for teachers and kids • Adapt the classrooms by decorating/painting • Improve the school area (creating new gardens, for example) • Activities with villagers: clean up the island, host family, or fishing trip with fishermen
Study Theme: AIMS of the PROJECT • To support Baan KohBulon School • To be part of the community of KohBulonLeh Island • To let children be familiar with volunteers and learn in international/multi-cultural atmosphere
The important study themes are education, and respect of environment, social values in a tourism area.
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in a school classroom. You will need to bring sleeping bag, a small mattress and a mosquito net for yourself. The living condition is very simple than you would think. You may find it completely different than in your country. There are basic toilets and showers and a kitchen where volunteers will cook by themselves They can take turn in daily tasks. The ingredients can be purchased at local grocery stores (but the price is like 5 times the normal price) or from the market on land (We’d rather take this option).
Language: Not so many people in the village can speak good English (except at the resorts). We will teach you some basic Thai language during the start of your project. Non verbal communication will be as well essential.
Requirements: The volunteers should be ready to stay in a remote area, to adapt to the local conditions with only basic facilities. Not manylocal people are able to speak in English. Volunteers should be able to handle spontaneous working environment and constant changes in the plans. The mentality and way of thinking is very different from the western world.
Approximate Location: BulonLeh Island is situated far off the coastline in the Andaman Sea under the authority of Mu KohPhetra National Park, which is approximately 22 kilometers away or 1.5 hours by boat from the main pier, Pakbara. It is located in the district of La Ngu, Satun province, Southern Thailand. The majority of villagers make a living on fisheries and tourism business that are 95% Muslim (approx. 100 residents). Geologically, this island is surrounded by several other small islands beginning with this initiation “Bulon” or known as Bulon Archipelagoes.
