Vardøhus museumsforening, Vardø
Description: Vardø is a small town in the very northeast of Norway. It has app. 2000 inhabitants. it is the oldest town in northern Norway, situated on an island in the Barents Sea, and is the only town in Norway situated in the arctic climate zone. The distance from Oslo to Vardø is about 2000km, so you need to estimate some extra costs for travelling there. Vardø has lots of history to offer visitors, amongst others memorials from World war 2, the northernmost fortress of Europe and a memorial of execution of women thought to be witches. Another aspect of Vardø are its scenery and nature. It can offer various birds nesting, and also good opportunities for hiking. Vardøhus museumsforening is a voluntary organisation in Vardø. One of its projects is refurbishing the old building of Vardø Museum.
Type of Work: The vols will refurbish the surroundings of the old building of Vardø Museum, called Lushaugen. The tasks will include trimming grass, scrape and paint fences, toolshed and flag pole at Lushaugen. Some of the work will also be at a place called Kiberg, situated south from Vardø, at the mainland. We will clean inside an old bunker from World war 2 in Kiberg. The work will be done with instruction from a work leader.
Study Theme: Norwegian-Russian relations in the northern part of Norway.
Accommodation: Inside the old building of Vardø Museum, Lushaugen. There are some rooms there at disposal for the vols. There is a kitchen and bathrooms as well. The house is situated near the centre of Vardø.
Requirements: Please, bring raingear.
Absolutely no use of drugs.

Notes: Be prepared for physical work during the workcamp that may be rough, but you will have lots of fun, too. Besides the manual work we will offer exciting activities in and near Vardø.
