Mountains enchanted: the art of water springs in the Italian Alps
Description: 'Vivere la Montagna' is a no-profit organisation, established in 2012 with the scope of promoting, developing and enhancing the territory in its cultural, touristic, economical, environmental and social-life aspects in the local highlands. This part of the Italian Alps is well known for its small natural springs of water of excellent quality, spread all over the mountain territory. In order to be appreciated, the water springs require systematic cleaning of the area and a regular maintenance.
Type of Work: The main goal of the project, that combines cultural and touristic elements, is to bring back the water springs to a proper usability. In order to improve the conditions of the natural sources and enhance the touristic potential of the local area, the volunteers will contribute to the cleaning and restoration activities with basic manual work. This will be achieved by different maintenance activities dedicated to the recovery of the springs and the pathways leading to them as well as doing some environmental engineering works and removing excess vegetation in the forest areas.
Study Theme: Water represents the biggest global concern in terms of natural resources, and not only in the driest regions. Therefore, this project focuses on the important role of water springs in the development of life in the Cozie Alps territories. The research, realized with the collaboration of other entities and associations, has the objective to re-discover names, facts, traditions and stories related to the springs in order to raise awareness about water in all its forms - starting from the water sources that even with their name, symbolize the source of everything, including life itself.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in the Camping Verna that has a space for tents with bathrooms and common area for cooking and eating. There is also a free WiFi service. However, the tents and other camping equipments are not provided so the volunteers should bring their own!
Requirements: Ability to execute basic manual activities and work in conditions that are not always comfortable in the middle of Alpine woodland areas. Any experience in environmental engineering would be highly appreciated.
Approximate Location: The Camp is based in Cumiana (about 40 km from Turin), within Camping Verna di Cumiana - Strada Verna 37. In the Alps mountain, at about 7 km from the main town square. The nearest airport is Caselle. Cumiana is easily reachable from Turin by bus.
Notes: The activities are part of the project for the recovery of water springs that VLM has been carrying out since its establishment. It involves cultural, touristic, environmental and social elements. The volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about the association's activities and to participate in some cultural and social events. The Cozie Alps, where the activities will take place, is a beautiful mountain area, that has preserved its intact territory and it is a desired destination of many tourists. Therefore, it is an enchanted place for the volunteers to spend some moments immersed in the quietness of wild nature during their free time.
