Hilton-Winn Farm Project
Description: About: The Hilton-Winn Farm is a non-profit organization, dedicated to positive youth development, nature based education, and a stewardship of the unique agricultural landscape of New England. The farm’s 48 acres of rolling fields and forests, along with the farmhouse and barn, form the unique Facilities to provide nature and farm- based education programs that serve thousands of children , teens, and families from New England. The mission of the Youth Enrichment Center at Hilton-Winn Farm is to provide a country farm experience to enrich the hearts, minds, and spirits of our Youth. Website: www.hilton-winnfarm.org
Type of Work: Your work will include maintenance of 4 miles of hiking trails, helping in the vegetable gardens, installing fencing for animals, light painting, assisting with the youth programs interacting with the children ages 4-12, and other farm projects. This entails getting dirty and working hard as a team. The work is very rewarding.
Study Theme: Learning about Maine's food, culture, and habitats and discuss view points from Maine as well as each person's view point and personal cultural experiences.
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in a comfortable farmhouse with beds, well equipped kitchen and dining room. Volunteers will share their bedrooms with other members of the Volunteers for Peace Group. Volunteers will cook meals as a group. Bring some recipes from home to share and please let us know if you have any special dietary needs. We will also be eating some lunches outside with the children.
Approximate Location: Location: based in beautiful Southern Maine, at the York County’s Hilton-Winn Farm, a King’s Grant farm dating back to the 1600s, in the New England region of the United States. Cape Neddick is 40 minutes South of Portland, Maine’s largest City. The state of Maine, in the far northeast corner of the country is known for its beaches, rugged coastline, forests, and natural beauty. The Hilton-Winn farm is located 3.4 miles from the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and Beaches.
Notes: Cape Neddick/ York Maine is a popular tourist destination in the summer. There are beautiful beaches, hiking trails, historical museums, outdoor theatres and seaside activities. There are many opportunities to enjoy beauty and nature. We will be hosting a community Barbecue with food, games, music, and fellowship. You will be participating in informal discussions and activities about topics of interest to the group. Bring music and games to share!
