On the Rivers of Memory-3
Description: “On the Rivers of Memory” is the name of a yearly recurring research project organized by the Youth Memorial. Volunteers go on short trips around the Perm Region to collect materials concerning political repression in the Soviet era. In particular, they interview former political prisoners, record their recollections, and put up commemorative signs at the sites of former Gulag camps or “special settlements”.
Type of Work: In the first week of the project volunteers will collect “oral history” (memories, testimonies) from the local population in the city of Osa, Barda and nearby settlements, and put up commemorative signs in memory of the victims of political repressions.
In the second part of the project volunteers will go by boat (catamaranas) and will collect “oral history” (memories, testimonies) from the local population in the city of Kungur, in the village of Ust-Kishert and nearby settlements, and put up commemorative signs in memory of the victims of political repressions.
Study Theme: history of the political repression in Soviet time in Russia. All the projects of the Youth Memorial focus on promoting the ideas of tolerance, intercultural dialogue, democracy and Human Rights through the development of civic activism. We encourage volunteers to engage in preserving the memory of the past in their countries, in commemorating the victims of totalitarian regimes through participation in civil actions.
Accommodation: in the tents. Volunteers should be ready for the basic conditions
Requirements: • participants must be present for the whole duration of the project (except, of course, force majeure circumstances or situations previously agreed with the organizers); • participants are expected to be highly motivated for the type of work and activities proposed
Approximate Location: Villages of Barda and Yelovo, town of Osa in the Perm Region. Participants will be travelling by private cars. Second part - Kungur and Kishertsky municipal districts in the Perm Region, the Sylva river, traveling by catamarans from the village of Ust-Kishert to the city of Kungur in the south of the Perm region. Vounteers should go to the Perm city at the first day of the workcamp.
Notes: The Youth Memorial provides the necessary traveling equipment (catamarans, tents) and, if necessary, sleeping bags and backpacks. The organizers will cover most of the food, accommodation, cultural and educational programs costs during each expedition. Travelling expenses from and to Perm will also be covered by the host organisation.
