Promoting Health and wellbeing for the children in Kibunranga Kurian Community
Description: KIBURANGA community based organisation is an indigenous non-political membership organization which is non-sectarian and non-profit, it started in 2007 as a work camp organization registered under the societies act. In 2007 it was registered as a community based organization. Since a few years we are cooperating with Service Civil International (SCI) to foster ideas of volunteerism, enhance exchanges and promote mutual understanding and learning. As of 2014 Kiburanga is an official partner organisation of SCI. Kiburanga association promotes voluntary service in one of the most remote and inaccesible parts of Kenya, Kuria region, where poverty levels are high and education one of the lowest in the country.
Type of Work: The main aim of this activity is to engage the community to improve their health
- Childrens sports and Arts activities
- Raising Awareness on the basic health issuss
- Bricks making
- Home visits and cultural exchange with community members
Study Theme: The Kuria community is known for its unique culture as seen during cultural passage like traditional marriages, circumcision, etc.,
Accommodation: The community will accommodate volunteers in a house provided by the local people, with separate room for male and female volunteers. There are pit latrines, no running showers but bath-shelters for use will be provided and majority of homes have no electricity. We strongly advice volunteers to be flexible and easily adapt to the provision of other culture within the local environment and appreciate its uniqueness. Volunteers will sleep on the floor (affordable mattresses can be purchased in the community or volunteers need to bring their own sleeping mattress along) .
Requirements: Be prepared to experience the complex development challenges and will be expected to climb down to the level of host community, be guided on the customs and conduct and should not strive to portray living standards beyond their means. Access to clean water.
Approximate Location: KIBURANGA, KENYA, in Kuria region is located near Isebania town, in Migori County, about 500km from the capital of Kenya.
