Watermill - Let's talk about FOOD! and 100 years of Workcamps (Giersleben)
Description: The Lucas Mill is located in Giersleben, a small village in Saxony-Anhalt. The association 'Lucas Mühle e.V'. was founded in 2018 by 7 people. Being a new project there is a lot to do and to get active with. The association shall strive for an ecological, and organic way of using the land around the mill. Make it a place where people can meet, exchange knowledge, and experience and also traditional skills. No matter how old someone is, or where the person comes from. The people that are active around the mill are very diverse, and put in a lot of effort during their free time. At the end of the camp, you will join the "100 years of workcamps" celebration in Berlin. At various times during the work camp you will discuss the goals and effects of work camps to prepare for the event in Berlin.
Type of Work: Maintenance of the building, general garden and farm work, planting trees, weeding the yard, wood work, handicrafts, re-constructing of parts of buildings on site.
Study Theme: Learning about the Lucas Mill and wheat production in Germany in general. Three workshops about food and nutrition: Where is our food coming from? Under which conditions did it grow/ was it produced? How much food do I need? People are invited to share their knowledge about veganism, food sharing and other related topics. Additionally a workshop with a local artist about peace and food creating a small "peace brick" to contribute to the big monument "Floris Pax" (floris-pax.eu). Volunteering in general as a preparation of the conference in Berlin.
Accommodation: Indoor sleeping area with mattresses in a big old house. No gender segregation possible. Very simple sanitary conditions. No running water available but water will be provided. Veggies from the garden or grown locally. The camp is vegetarian! Breakfast and Dinner will be prepared by the participants, lunch by members and friends of the Lucas mill. Please bring outdoor clothes, good shoes or boots, a warm sleeping bag and be prepared for cold nights. It is hard to predict the weather in August in Germany. During the anniversary event you will stay at the "Jugendherberge am Ostkreuz" in Berlin.
Language: You should be able to discuss in English about the topics of the camp.
Requirements: Workcamp experience. Readiness to do physical work up to 5-6 hours daily. Ability to adapt to very basic conditions. Enjoying farming and crafting work with all its many and varied challenges and possibilities. Curiosity to learn, try and develop new skills. Mindfulness, team-spirit and self-initiative desired. Interest in the topic of food and nutrition.
Notes: There will be an intercultural evening at the mill and you can share sweets, songs, dances, etc. In the end you will show the result of the camp to the public. At the moment there is no WiFi at the mill. This year, the camp will be part of the anniversary campaign "100 years of workcamps - Peace and Solidarity for the Future" and will join a big event from 25.-28.08. in Berlin. Together with volunteers from 9 other camps you will be able to present your experiences of your workcamp and develop content and formats for future workcamps in workshops. Representatives from politics, media and experts (universities, youth associations) are also invited to the anniversary celebrations. Motivation letter required!
