"Quartiers Libres " - Access to culture for everyone!
Description: “Quartiers Libres” consists in a series of cultural activities and events organized by the City of Charleroi and the Cultural Centre of Charleroi “Eden” during 2 weekends. Artists and entertainers will take over public parks and working-class neighbourhoods in order to propose cultural activities accessible to all, young and old! All the children and their families are invited to live something new and for free. The aims of this project are to create links, to give children access to culture, to provide information, parental support, enjoy the pleasure of playing together, revive the cultural sector and revitalise the neighbourhoods of Charleroi.
Type of Work: The working days will take place in two blocks of 4 days (Thursday to Sunday). The project is itinerant and therefore, in order to reach out to people in the neighbourhoods, the team will set up and dismantle the stands in 2 different locations in the city of Charleroi. The volunteers will help with setting up and dismantling during the events, transporting material, entertaining during recreational activities, greeting the public, cleaning the site, etc. The work will mainly take place in the afternoon and evening. There will be one or two days off for the volunteers to discover the city of Charleroi.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated at the “Charles Rimbaud” youth hostel in the centre of Charleroi in shared rooms. Food will be provided on the work sites during the working days with the working teams. The rest of the time and for breakfasts, the volunteers will have access to the kitchen of the youth hostel and will cook themselves.
Language: Basic French is required in order to be able to interact with the public and the entertainers. Volunteers will communicate with each other in English.
Requirements: For volunteers who enjoy doing activities with children, teenagers and their families. The work can sometimes be physically demanding when setting up the infrastructures. Volunteers should also enjoy manual work. Volunteers with artistic skills are welcome.
Approximate Location: Charleroi City - Parc Bivort in Jumet and in the working-class district of Hyernaux Poffé in Montignies-sur-Sambre
Notes: Additional fee : Many SCI workcamps will have an additional fee of €50.00. This will cover - local hosting costs; International insurance costs of the volunteer; a small travel fund to enable disadvantaged volunteers to join projects; administration costs of SCI International. If you apply through an SCI branch the fee will be included in the fee you pay to your sending branch. If you apply through a partner organisation you will pay the fee on arrival at the project; direct to the hosting branch or through a PayPal transfer system.
