Build the socio-cultural center "La Comunanza" for the post earthquakes
Description: Emidio di Treviri is a research-action collective made up of researchers, professionals and activists who came together starting from a call to action spread during the earthquakes that hit the central Apennines in 2016-2017. It has organised numerous information campaigns, public assemblies, summerschools, conferences, seminars and projects to support the right to live and decide in the Apennine crater. The project consists in the construction of the rural socio-cultural centre "La Comunanza" through the renovation of a building located in the municipality of Roccafluvione (AP), in the Monte Ceresa area. The centre will be a permanent centre for socio-cultural activities in order to make accessible a highly marginal territory subject to abandonment and depopulation dynamics.
Type of Work: The camp consists of the rehabilitation of an abandoned building, together with its land, using green building techniques. The work will therefore consist of cleaning and clearing the building, cleaning the garden and the woodland, and building and plastering all the surfaces of the house using green building techniques. This will be complemented by cleaning a small part of the pathways in the area. Finally, the camp participants will be asked to collaborate in the logistics of the camp, both in daily activities and in activities related to the general setting up of the camp (setting up and dismantling the kitchen, setting up and dismantling the bathrooms, etc.).
Study Theme: During the camp, various training activities are foreseen related to the territorial context in which the camp takes place, namely the area of Mount Ceresa. In particular, information on the historical and cultural characteristics of the area will be shared with the volunteers, within a discourse that will deepen the dynamics related to the earthquake and post-earthquake and the trajectories of development in the Apennine area. The training sessions will address the issues described above from the point of view of sociological, geographical, urban planning and anthropological studies.
Accommodation: The camp will take place in the hamlet of pesaturo, using the outdoor spaces provided by the villagers: all spaces (tent area, toilets, shower area, kitchen area, activity area and work area) will therefore be close to each other (3 minutes walk). Participants will sleep in mixed gender campsites (tent required). There will be several toilets (one near the tents) and an area with at least 3 showers. Internet connection is not guaranteed, but telephone coverage is available throughout the area. Volunteers are asked to bring towels and all necessary camping equipment.
Requirements: No special skills are required. The work will be manual but not hard, and rest will be provided so as not to fatigue the participants. Green building uses natural materials, so any problems related to allergies are minor and unrelated to those related to materials used in traditional building.
Approximate Location: The camp will take place in the small hamlet of Pesaturo in the municipality of Roccafluvione, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region. Pesaturo is not listed on googlemaps: it is located near the equally small hamlet of Osoli.
Notes: Please kindly note that there is an additional incoming fee of 50 Euros for all volunteers applying through Partner organisations or Contacts of the SCI network. Check the status here: https://bit.ly/3vhBD5J. This fee covers hosting costs, insurance, a small travel fund to enable disadvantaged volunteers to join projects and administration costs and is to be paid on arrival at the project or online directly to the hosting branch. For volunteers coming through SCI Branches and Groups there is no additional incoming fee, since the costs covered by the additional fee are included in the amount paid to the sending branch.
