Description: The workcamp will take place in a local community where the biggest waste sorting center and the only place with a plastic incinerator of the district are situated. The waste issues are important in Sri Lanka, between the insufficient public service and the wild animals which scatter the waste anywhere. The environment is saturated with unsorted waste that degrades and sabotages the natural landscape.
With the urban council, we would like to work together to build a more sustainable lifestyle, and raise awareness of this issue across all generations.
Type of Work: The main activity is to create and build an organic garden/farming. The volunteers will also have to clean the road around the waste sorting center, separate plastic, organic and glass waste. In a second step, the volunteers will raise awareness among the young generation at the local school and in the community on these issues by creating educational activities. Finally, intercultural and exchange activities will be planned during the whole workcamp.

Sri Lanka is going through a major economical and political crisis these days affecting the daily life of Sri Lankans : increase of food, gas, petrol, electricity / power cuts / protests that can sometimes lead to imposed curfew by the government. Don’t worry, you will always be safe with SCI members. Also the workcamps are situated in small rural communities, far from the potential protests of the cities. Just keep in mind that this could affect your travel a little, after/before the workcamp (even if most of the time the curfew doesn’t apply to tourists).
