Description: Kok Payom is a strong Muslim fishermen community from Satun province, Southern Thailand. Over 30 families of the village gathered to protect the bio diversity of their mangrove forest for over 15 years and to be responsible for the social life of the village. With DaLaa, we support them since 2009 by sending short and long term volunteers. This work camp will be focus on building the tree house for the Long term volunteers and visitor, and to renovate the community meeting place , volunteer will be able to share the energy of the community.
Type of Work: During those 2 weeks, you will be joining the long term volunteers there. The main work will be:
- To help the team for tree house building to be accommodation for long term volunteers and visitor
- Renovating/adjusting surrounding at community meeting place
- Organizing activities with kids especially on Sundays at KlongTohLem Academy
- Learning the local life of this fisherman’s village, Kok Payom
Study Theme: 1- To preserve the mangrove forest and the environment 2- To support and be part of Kok Payom learning community (to preserve their community values and life style) 3- To build a good relationship between volunteers and local people 4- To learn about local cultures and wisdom
Accommodation: Volunteers will sleep at the village meeting place (also the pier) on the river side. There is dormitory place and a big meeting area with a roof where we can put more tents. There will be simple mats, pillow and mosquito net. You will need to bring your sleeping bag and a small mattress if you want to be more comfortable. There are basic toilets, showers and a kitchen.
Language: The languages spoken in the camp will be English and Thai. Please make the effort to use one of these languages. What! Your Thai language is not that perfect. No worries. It doesn’t matter because you will have an opportunity to learn our culture and language during your stay.
Requirements: The volunteers should be ready to stay in a remote area, to adapt to the local conditions with only basic facilities. Volunteers should be able to handle spontaneous working environment and constant changes in the plans. The villagers of Kok Payom are Muslim so there must be no pork nor alcohol products brought to the village.
