Description: Kok Payom is a strong Muslim fishermen community in Satun province, Southern Thailand. Over 30 families in the village gathered to protect the bio diversity of their mangrove forest for over 15 years. As DaLaa, we support them since 2009 by sending short and long term volunteers to help. This work camp will focus on building the tree house for the long term volunteers and visitors, and to renovate the community meeting places, volunteer will be able to feel and share the spirit and energy of the community.
Type of Work: 1. Revitalizing some areas of the mangrove forest by pruning the small trees branches and allowing them enough place to grow
- Renovating/adjusting the surroundings in Klong Toh Lem school
- Organizing activities with kids especially on Sundays at Klong Toh Lem Academy
- Learning about the local life of this fisherman’s village
Study Theme: Preserve the mangrove forest and the environment and support and be a part of Kok Payom learning community (to preserve their community values and life style. To build a good relationship between volunteers and local people and learn about local cultures and wisdom.
Accommodation: Volunteers will stay at a open-air pavilion on the pier (Villagers use this place for the meeting and dock their boats sometimes). Tents, yoga mats, pillows, and mosquito nets will be provided. We suggest you bring your own sleeping bag, inflatable mattress, or another yoga mat. It’s OK if you don’t bring any of those, but you need to be sure that you will be comfortable in such condition.
Language: The languages spoken in the camp will be English and Thai. Please make the effort to use one of these languages. What! Your Thai language is not that perfect. No worries. It doesn’t matter because you will have an opportunity to learn our culture and language during your stay.
Requirements: The volunteers should be ready to stay in a local area, and to adapt to the local conditions with only basic facilities. Very few local people are able to speak in English. Volunteers should be able to handle spontaneous working environment and constant changes in the plans. You should be prepared about the different mentality of people here.
