Restoring And Protecting Rivers
Description: RESTORING AND PROTECTING RIVERS - A WAY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT aims to promote environmental education and reflect on the problems of garbage, waste, the cycle of the materials and sustainable growth, through the initiative to strengthen the sustainability of a slope of the Mondego River.
Type of Work: The work to be carried out will be: collection of rubbish, strengthen a section of slope using "Natural Engineering"; excavation and removal of improperly accumulated sediment; remove all dried plants, litter and rubble on the bank. During the Workcamp participants will perform the following tasks: • Reinforce a slope section using "Natural Engineering"; • Remove all dry plants, garbage and existing rubble on the bank; • Digging and removing improperly accumulated sediments; • Rebuild 2 slopes by placing wood, trees and plants (according to technical guidelines); • Reduce slope angle; • Coating the margin; • Elaborate dissemination/awareness materials on the advantages/importance of preserving the banks of rivers and streams and environmental sustainability.
Study Theme: It is intended that volunteers acquire knowledge in terms of environmental education and reflect/raise awareness about the importance of preserving water and its origins, the problem of garbage, waste, the cycle of materials and sustainable growth, namely: • awareness of the major problem of pollution in general and water pollution in particular; • awareness of the importance of preserving water, its sources and environmental sustainability; • acquire knowledge on how to reinforce the sustainability of river and stream slopes;
Accommodation: ACCOMODATION: The participants will stay at Hostel EntryFik. The participants will sleep in dormitories divided per gender. In the Hostel, we will have a team that clean the accommodation and cook the meals. MEALS: Meals will be served at the hostel. All special food requirements will be respected if there’s prior information sent to the participants. We will have 5 meals a day (breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and supper). INTERNET: The hostel provides free Wi-Fi.
Approximate Location: Maceira is a rural portuguese parish in the municipality of Fornos de Algodres, in the province of Beira Alta, in the Center region and sub-region of Serra da Estrela, with an area of 8.06 km² and 229 inhabitants.
