Wikipedia for Peace & Climate Justice Journalism (St. Imier BE)
Description: The aim of the project is to edit Wikipedia and provide more pieces of information and facts about different situations concerning climate justice & journalism across the world. The focus will be on the role and the responsibility of mass media in climate justice. We write about people, events and organisations that are important enough. This means that there need to be good sources of information about the content we write about (e.g. newspaper reports, scientific literature). This camp is a part of the initiative Wikipedia for Peace that Service Civil International and Wikimedia have been running since 2015 in order to improve the content about peace on Wikipedia and in order to engage new target groups (young people, activists, women*, queer people) in the world of Wikipedia.
Type of Work: Sessions will be conducted to write journalism articles about global and climate issues in various parts of the world to feed the civil society knowledge hubs with the aforementioned topics. We will spend ca. 6 hours per day doing research for articles and writing and translating articles on topics related to climate justice activists and awardees of the Goldman Environmental Prize. It gives visibility to the issues the activists advocate for. The participants will search for solutions and good practices through Wikipedia and other reliable and notable sources to include them in their articles. The workcamp includes training about editing Wikipedia provided by an experienced Wikipedian.
Study Theme: The Journalism of Climate Change Solution will be introduced to the participants through a non-formal education approach. We will talk a lot about Climate Justice Journalism and what we can achieve through journalism of solution. The workcamp provides a space for discussion, debate about climate change, and environmental problems in local areas.
Accommodation: We will be accommodated at a nice and big house that provides different dormitory rooms, a big kitchen and a social living space. Beds, blankets and pillows with covers are available. Please make sure you bring a sleeping bag or sheets, a towel and slippers! No washing machine available. There is free internet. The house is located at 1260 meter above sea level in the countryside and offers fantastic views.
Language: We will speak English in the group. You can write Wikipedia articles in any language you want. We encourage you to write in your native language.
Requirements: This workcamp is for beginners as well as for experienced Wikipedians (no experience is required!). Please bring a laptop (not only a tablet or phone). It would be appreciated if you would write 2-3 articles on this topic in the following year after the workcamp.
Notes: We will cook vegetarian meals (with vegan options) in teams in order to contribute to the principle of sustainability of the camp - food can be obtained from regional and sustainable resources. We are planning to visit SCI Archives in the Bibliothèque de la Ville La Chaux de Fonds and have a lecture about SCI history if the library will be open at the time of the workcamp. There will be hiking trips around Mont Soleil as well as a chance to visit the local area of the town of Saint Imier.
