Reconstruction of the historical heritage in the Requesens’ Castle
Description: The project concentrates on 3 topics: territory, heritage, history. Requesens Castle is located in the middle of the Albera Natural Park. This place is rich in terms of the biodiversity, fauna and flora of the territory. At the same time, the origin of the Castle dates back to medieval times and its diverse heritage comes from different stages of reconstruction and restoration, the last of greater impact during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), when it was a refuge for both sides, as shown by the evidence that has been engraved on the walls of the Castle. We want to carry out this volunteer camp to support the restoration tasks of the Castle of Requesens and conserve the historical memory of the area and to let participants confront their own experiences with the traditions of the area.
Type of Work: The work will consist of many tasks, i.e. reconstruction of the castle, support of the functioning of the castle (help with tours for tourists), work at the farm (with animals and plants), small maintainence works around the neighbourhood and preparation of supplies for winter. All the detailed tasks you will find in the infosheet, but as you can see there is a lot to do for everyone!
Study Theme: The study part, just as the volunteers tasks is going to be very diverse. On the one hand you will gain a lot of historical knowledge around the topic of Spanish Civil War and the role of the castle at that time. On the other hand you can discover the diverse nature of the Natural Park that has a lot to offer in that area and depending on interests of volunteers exercusions to other natural parks can be also arranged. Lastly you will have a chance to learn about local cuisine and wine culture by visiting local wineries. Cultural exchange is also encouraged.
Accommodation: The rooms with mattresses are going to be available, you need to bring your own sleeping bag and a headlight. There is no electricity in rooms, you can charge your phone in the castle or bring powerbanks with solar battery. The organisers asked for you to bring organic soaps with you and dinner or the first day of the project. Rest of the days different group of volunteers will prepare food with ingredients provided by the camp organisers.
Requirements: No specific skills are required, just interest in cultural heritage, history and discovery of new areas
