Building seedling nursery, learning about natural building and food
Description: The workcamp will take place in Bozevce village, where GAIA runs an educational program about natural building, permaculture and sustainable living. The main idea of the program is to create a place & space which provides examples of good practices in natural building, permaculture, food production and solidar/fair economy, where organizations and individuals share values and principles, as well as responsibilities and resources. We build with natural materials such as wood, straw and mud, and we are trying to produce healthy food for those gathering here. This workcamp will contribute to the place by building a nursery structure for seedlings that will be used for producing food in the next years. The idea is to build the nursery with traditional carpentry and second-hand materials.
Type of Work: The idea is to work together on the building of a greenhouse for seedlings. By using locally sourced wood and traditional joinery techniques we will create a timber structure and then use old windows to create a greenhouse effect. The work will be physical, and you will get to learn about use of hand tools for woodwork, basic structural knowledge and first steps on traditional carpentry. By the end of the camp you will get to see the finished structure of the object.
Study Theme: The workcamp will be intensive in working and learning too! The study sessions will cover: traditional carpentry, natural building, permaculture, gardening, preserving food (vegetables, fruits, mushrooms). During the workcamp, there will be a session of introduction to permaculture, so the volunteers will have a chance to learn more about the basics of it, and get inspired to discover more.
Accommodation: Accommodation is simple, in a house with shared sleeping rooms or in tents. The volunteers should bring sleeping bags. Food will be vegetarian and seasonal, and local and organic as possible. The volunteers will cook, a schedule will be made on the spot. There are outdoor showers, 1 indoor shower, compost toilets and plenty of space to relax and enjoy nature. There are many animals around the property, such as dogs, cats, chickens, goats… There is WiFi for situations when needed, but we will try to disconnect from the virtual world to be able to connect with each other during this workcamp.
Requirements: Nature of the work will be physical, and it might be still hot. Volunteers should be flexible, as some work might be depending on the weather.
Approximate Location: Boževce/Bozhevc, is a remote village of 40 inhabitants in the east part of Kosovo.
