Description: Addressing issues of climate justice in our community by creating a environment for young generations to understand through cleanup, awareness raising. Young people have historically led the charge against environmental, social and racial injustice. However, in the last several years, they have mobilized like never before on the issue of climate justice. Spurred on by the speeches and marches of Greta Thunberg, millions of children and young people globally voiced their concerns and demanded that their governments take action on climate change. Their voices have demonstrated the urgency they are feeling that time is running out and that they, as the younger generation, will suffer the consequences of climate change more greatly than their parents and grandparents.
Type of Work: The South Africa Volunteer Work Camp Association (SAVWA) Climate Justice Work Camp is an initiative to encourage our younger generation to realise the rising climate change our world is experiencing. Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers will have an opportunity to get hands on tasks from they will set in addressing climate justice in our community of Soshanguve, through advocacy, clean up campaign and various methods to get our message out.
We will have various community interactions and work on various activities within the local community. Volunteers are encouraged to bring an open mind as we will have various activities to keep them busy for the work camp period.
Study Theme: According to the World Bank, by the time many of the teenage climate activists of today are in their late 20s, climate change could force an additional 100 million people into extreme poverty. In addition, by 2050, the International Food Policy Research institute estimates a 20% increase in malnourished children compared to what we would see without climate change.In order to better understand the youth perspective of climate justice, SAVWA wi gathered a small group of experts and activists for a this 2 week workcamp.
Accommodation: Accommodation will be in a house and venue of activities in Soshanguve. Participants will be required to bring their own sleeping bags. The accommodation has a simple bathroom with shower and there is running water. The accommodation and workplace have flushing toilets and do have electricity.
Language: Language: The community has multi-cultural people and English is mostly spoken with local languages such as Ndebele, Zulu, and other local languages
Requirements: 1. To be open-minded and “doer” type
- Ready to stand out in front of the others coordinate the Climate Just
- Any knowledge of campaign, advocacy & social media
- Please bring some typical food & cookies & recipes & pictures & flags and if possible musical pieces, songs, instruments
- Please also bring for the children (if it’s possible) clothes& toys that you don’t need for our community

Notes: Leisure Activities: The Weekend is meant to be for free tours that the group can organize by themselves at their own expense. All our work camps are reserved for cultural nights when each volunteer can present her/his country and culture. Requirements: Qualification of participants: Open minded, ready to interact with other people of different cultural background - Positive attitude - Willing to share his/her experiences - Flexible to live/stay in simple living conditions - Flexible to eat local food - No experience needed at all.
