Description: Sri Lanka celebrates its traditional New Year, known as "Sinhala and Tamil New Year" or "Aluth Avurudu" in Sinhala, with great enthusiasm and cultural significance. The festival usually takes place in April 12 to 14 and marks the beginning of the astrological New Year in the Sinhalese and Tamil calendars. The date is determined by the position of the sun and the transition of the zodiac signs. People in Sri Lanka celebrate the new year and organise festivals with traditional games and events to mark the new year.
Type of Work: We will organise a festival to celebrate the new year with traditional games and social gatherings. We aim to bring children from different communities including Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim to this festival so they can celebrate the new year together in peace. Volunteers will work in teams to arrange the festival venue prior to the event and organise various games and activities with the local organising team on the day of the festival.
