Na Fir Bolg! A solidarity and alternative festival
Description: Na Fir Bolg is a three-day family oriented alternative music festival organized in the Flemish Region. The first edition of this festival was organized in 1996, as a fundraiser for several environmental organizations. Throughout the years the festival grew but the spirit of the festival stayed the same. Nowadays there are two stages which provide a variety of local and international folk music. About 15,000 visitors come to enjoy the festival’s friendly atmosphere. People involved are all volunteers, committed to bringing an alternative to the big commercial festivals. The profits of the festival go to environmental and other charity organizations. This year the festival takes place from July 5th to 7th.
Type of Work: Hard manual work. During the build-up, volunteers will provide logistical help: installing water and electricity systems, installing fences around the festival grounds, stages, backstage, kitchen, bar, etc. After these tasks are completed, volunteers will help with putting the final touches to the festival: decoration, attaching posters… During the festival volunteers will be completely free of any work in order to attend the concerts and enjoy the festival life! After the festival has been concluded (i.e. Monday July 8th), volunteers will assist in dismantling and cleaning the festival ground. After concluding the clean-up (typically 2, maximum 3 days), the remainder of the camp will be devoted to cultural visits in the region and to some cities in Belgium.
Study Theme: History and philosophy of "Na Fir Bolg", a cultural and solidary festival.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a building located next to the festival. There will be a cooking team who will cook for all the volunteers. Volunteers will need to bring mattress and a sleeping bag and will be sleeping on floor level. There will be bicycles provided in order for them to move around.
Language: English.
Requirements: This camp is for all the volunteers wishing to discover the organization of a solidarity festival and not who are not afraid of hard manual work. Due to the characteristics of the festival some days the working hours could be more than expected, but the total number of hours during the volunteering project shall not exceed 6 hours per day.
