Description: Sri Pada, also known as Adam's Peak, is an ancient pilgrimage site that has long attracted thousands of Buddhist pilgrims. Standing at 7,360 feet (2,250 meters), it offers breathtaking views above the surrounding mountain ranges. The pilgrim season runs from December to May, during which time the influx of visitors leads to significant environmental challenges, particularly with plastic waste. As thousands ascend to the mountaintop temple, plastic waste often mixes with the natural environment. When the rainy season begins, this plastic is washed away, ultimately ending up in local rivers, posing a threat to ecosystems and water quality.
Type of Work: We encourage local volunteers to participate in an environmental cleanup at the end of the pilgrim season. This initiative will focus on collecting plastic waste left along the trail to Sri Pada. Volunteers will work together to gather the litter and transport it to a recycling collection point, helping to restore the natural beauty of the area and mitigate the environmental impact of increased plastic waste. This effort not only promotes environmental stewardship but also fosters community engagement in protecting local ecosystems.
Study Theme: Biodiversity and environmental protection
Accommodation: Volunteers will be staying at a temple located midway to the top of the mountain, where a few shared rooms are available for accommodation, with basic toilet facilities. Volunteers will sleep on the floor, so it is essential to bring a sleeping bag. Although Sri Lanka generally has warm weather, this mountainous location can be quite cold at night, and rain is common, so volunteers should be prepared for these conditions. This unique setting offers an opportunity to immerse oneself in the neture while contributing to the environmental cleanup efforts.
