Music Festival (Moers near Duisburg)

Description: The Moers Festival is an international music festival that has been running for 54 years and represents all kinds of music that are not part of the mainstream. In addition to concerts on various stages, there are panel discussions on political and cultural topics, participatory activities, and events happening all around the city of Moers. Throughout the festival grounds, there is a market where jewelry, clothing, food, and drinks are sold, and attendees can also camp on-site.
Type of Work: Before the festival begins, we need to set up the stages, finish and install decorations, put up posters, and prepare the festival grounds. After the festival, everything needs to be taken down and the site cleaned up. During the festival, participants help with entrance control, backstage preparations, catering assistance, artist support, running errands and patrolling, assisting with the children’s area, playing minor roles in videos and streams, and selling merchandise. The tasks are diverse and can change throughout the day. Some jobs are physical, others interactive. Some require more responsibility than others. You will also be working on weekends and not always alongside other participants, but of course, there will be enough group time and free time.
Study Theme: Participants will gain insights into both the front- and backstage operations of the festival. They will have the opportunity to see how an international music festival is organized and what it takes to make it happen. They can explore various work areas and during work they will also have the chance to watch concerts and discussions and talk to artists, crew members, and international press representatives. Additionally, there will be plenty of time to get to know each other during work.
Accommodation: Participants will stay at SCI:Moers in cozy field beds, so please bring a sleeping bag and pillow. There are showers, toilets, a large kitchen, and a common room available. Meals will be provided on the festival grounds. During setup and takedown, participants will eat with the crew, and during the festival, they will have access to artist and crew catering.
Language: German and English (good English skills are necessary).
Requirements: Interest in festivals and cultural events, no hesitation about physical work or working independently, willingness to take on responsibility, openness and motivation for new tasks, personal commitment, and good English skills (essential for smooth workflow).
Approximate Location: Moers is located on the outskirts of the Ruhr area, near Duisburg. The festival grounds are situated on the edge of Moers Schlosspark and consist of two to three permanent stages, a festival market, a camping area, and many smaller and ever-changing venues. Concerts and events also take place in the city center and in various shops and venues.
Notes: Participants will sometimes work as a group but also separately across the festival grounds, supporting the volunteer team with a variety of tasks. Since the festival takes place over a weekend (June 6–9, 2025), participants will not have those days off but will work as they would on weekdays.
Incoming Fee of 50€ for volunteers applying via partner organisations and contacts of SCI: https://sci-d.de/incomingfee.
