Description: The aqueduct of the Ex hacienda de El Hospital has been the object of an enhancement by AMVIAC in collaboration various stakeholders since 2019. It is a construction from the XVII C. of 1.5 kilometers of development in which the use of limestone and partition is observed, joined with mortar of slaked lime and river sand, as well as scraps of the same rock. Its formation is a succession of semicircular arches throughout its development. More than 20 camps have been held there with the participation of more than 450 volunteers. The works done have been in the field of architecture, civil engineering, history, biology, archaeology, among others. The project aims to involve the local community in this enhancement and generate a tourist, economic, cultural and social development of the region.
Type of Work: The volunteers will continue with the masonry work on the upper part of a section of the aqueduct as well as with the construction of the wooden truss using traditional methods that will serve to restore one of the arches of this historical monument, the elimination of the joints in poor condition, and its restoration using lime to prepare the mortar with cactus additive (mucilage) to fill the joints. They will also work on the facing of the stone in some parts of the aqueduct. Awareness activities will be carried out with the local population on the importance of protecting their cultural heritage. In addition, they will organize recreational activities at the end of the day and there will be days of rest where they can visit important sites in the region.
Study Theme: Cultural heritage preservation and protection. The project to enhance and restore the aqueduct was born from the concern of Cuautla citizens to improve their built cultural heritage, various actions have been carried out with the purpose of highlighting this monument and giving it life to it. Volunteers will explore and learn about restoration techniques.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be staying in a house with all services. It is necessary that the volunteers bring a sleeping bag.
Language: Usually AMVIAC does not required volunteers to speak Spanish although the local population in general does not speak other languange but Spanish. English though, is a language that can install itself naturally because of the international volunteers participating.
Requirements: : Interest in cultural heritage issues and ease of adaptation to collective dynamics. Bring materials from your country or state, as well as some traditional items to show the local population about your culture. Be open to learning and recognizing the values of others and be willing to work as a team and participate in community life.
Approximate Location: The aqueduct is located in the El Hospital ejido in the municipality of Cuautla, Morelos, a city located 100 km from Mexico City. It is a historic city that was the scene of important moments of Independence and the Mexican Revolution.
Notes: This camp allows to anyone, regardless of their knowledge of architecture or restauration areas, to participate and get acquainted with the processes of restoring a cultural heritage building.
