Forest Education: Exploring Nature at Lake Schluchsee in the Black Forest

Description: A new area for forest education activities is being created in the heart of the Black Forest, right by the idyllic Schluchsee. Together with the workcamp participants, this natural learning and experience space will be designed. A barefoot path will be built, using various natural materials to engage the senses and offer an immersive nature experience. A sound station will take shape through the participants’ creative ideas, allowing them to design unique sound objects with the provided materials. Additionally, trees and shrubs will be planted, natural fences constructed, and habitats for insects and small creatures established—such as a sandarium and deadwood areas. This camp combines community engagement, nature experiences, and creative work on a sustainable project.
Type of Work: During the workcamp, participants will have the opportunity to learn basic craftsmanship skills. Under the expert guidance of a master carpenter, the focus will be on woodworking, including the use of tools such as cordless screwdrivers and drills. Since the design of the forest education area is a key aspect of the project, creative ideas are highly encouraged. Participants can especially showcase their musical and artistic talents when constructing the sound station. All work will take place outdoors, surrounded by the stunning nature of the Black Forest. Using hoes and spades, trees will be planted, natural materials collected, and various gardening tasks completed. Together, a unique and inspiring space for future environmental education will be created.
Study Theme: The study part of the camp focuses on biodiversity. Which creatures need which habitats, and how can these be preserved or created in harmony with human life? Together, we will explore different plants, from edible wild herbs to inedible species. Cooking over an open fire provides hands-on experience with natural cuisine. Additionally, we will look at the knowledge of indigenous peoples—how do they use nature sustainably? What techniques, such as fire-making, can we learn from them?
Accommodation: Accommodation is provided in a so-called Dome and MiniBootel – large communal tents that offer a unique nature experience (see camp photos). Please bring a sleeping mat, sleeping bag, and camping dishes (plate, cutlery, cup) for a comfortable stay. The spacious camp area includes ample sanitary facilities, sheltered spaces, and cozy fire pits for enjoyable evening gatherings. Meals will be prepared together as a group, focusing on vegetarian dishes. Additionally, 1–2 BBQ evenings will be organized, offering a variety of options.
