Culture, Cuisine, Children's City - Join in and cook with and for children in a unique project!

Description: The children's town project ‘nasze miasto - our town’ was founded in Görlitz in the summer of 2004 and has taken place every two years since then. The children's town is a holiday programme for children aged between 7 and 14. As the project is a bilingual programme in German and Polish, children from the German-Polish town of Görlitz/Zgorcelec (Germany/Poland) can get to know each other better over the two weeks. They can slip into the roles of adults and decide what should happen in their town. In the town, built from huts and tents in a central location, people work in different professions and live together. The aim of the project is to awaken an understanding of how people live together and an interest in other cultures and to develop these new social skills.
Type of Work: All children who come to the city playfully practise a profession. For example, there are Firemen/women, Bakers, Policemen/women or Craftsmen/women. The children get an impression of the working life of adults, earn play money and spend it on services, products and food. The task of the SCI volunteers is to run the Kinderstadt catering together with the children. Together with the children, they prepare food, take care of the ambience at mealtimes and are welcome to incorporate their own culture. The tasks also include the logistics of the kitchen, such as washing the dishes. There is also support work for the Children's Town, such as setting up and dismantling the tents and stalls.
Study Theme: Getting to know the ‘Children's Town’ concept. A children's town is a pedagogically supervised large-scale play project that supports the participation of children and the learning of democracy. For more information on Kinderstadt, visit www.kindermiasto.eu. The city of Görlitz, known from numerous Hollywood movies, is worth exploring in more detail, a guided tour of the city can be organized. In the weekend excursions to the cities of Dresden, Berlin and Wroclaw, the Fürst Pückler Park in Bad Muskau, the Zittau Mountains, the Königshain Mountains, Herrnhut and many more are possible.
Accommodation: The children stay overnight with their families so that the camp group is among themselves in the evenings. The participants are accommodated in a youth club outside the children's town. There are gender-segregated dormitories, washing facilities, showers and a kitchen. You should bring your own sleeping mat and sleeping bag. Lunch from Monday to Friday is provided centrally by the Kindermiasto. Breakfast, dinner and catering at the weekends are organised by the camp group themselves. Participants are responsible for keeping their accommodation clean.
Language: The language within the workcamp is English. The languages in the Kinderstadt are German and Polish. It is a great advantage to understand one of them at least a little bit.
Requirements: Flexibility and willingness to integrate into the requirements of the Kinderstadt. Openness and sociability. Enjoy cooking for larger groups. Sensitive interaction with the children is a prerequisite.
Approximate Location: Görlitz is the easternmost city in Germany, about 90 km east of Dresden, and is located in the state of Saxony. The Neisse River flows through the city, dividing it since 1945 into the western, German part (Görlitz) and the eastern, Polish part (Zgorzelec). Today, Görlitz and its Polish sister city Zgorzelec jointly call themselves the "European City". Best known is the well-preserved old town, whose buildings date from different eras and display a variety of architectural styles.
Notes: On weekends, it is possible to make a trip to Dresden or to the Polish city of Wroclaw. At the Berzdorfer See you can swim and canoe. Trips to the Königshainer Berge or the Zittauer Gebirge are possible. In the house where the workcamp takes place, there is also a climbing wall and game facilities such as table football, table tennis, billiards, etc..
